    Angels release veteran slugger Raul Ibanez

  • Raul Ibanez hit 29 home runs last season for the Seattle Mariners, a staggering total for a player in his age 41 season playing his home games in pitcher-friendly Safeco Field. The Angels gave him a one-year, $2.75 million contract this offseason (he could earn bonuses based on plate appearances), hoping he would be able to provide some left-handed power from left field and the DH spot. That didn’t work out so well, and the team released him Saturday afternoon.  In 190 plate appearances this se夜网论坛ason, Ibanez was hitting just .157 with three home runs. That’s the lowest batting average for any player with at least 180 PAs. He’d actually raised that average a bit lately; he’d hit .261 in his past nine games. What’s next for Ibanez? Good question. He’s long been considered one of baseball’s good people, so he would be a solid clubhouse addition for a team that feels he can find some of the power that’s been missing this season.  Or, this could be the end of the road for Ibanez, who turned 42 at the beginning of June.The Angels also optioned right-hander Cam Bedrosian to Double-A Arkansas, after he gave up nine runs, eight hits and seven walks in 5 2/3 innings over his first six big league appearances.
