World Series ratings: St. Louis TV viewers pick Cards over Rams

  • NEW YORK — No surprise: St. Louis is a baseball town. The Cardinals played a pivotal World Series game at home the same day that the struggling Rams hosted "Monday Night Football." More than four times as many households in the metropolitan area were tuned in to baseball than football. The Cardinals' 3-1 loss in Game 5 to the Boston Red Sox was watched by an average of 14.4 million viewers nationally on Fox. The 8.9 rating was up 1 percent from the last Game 5, in 2011 between St. Louis and the Texas Rangers, the network said Tuesday. The Rams' 14-9 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks averaged 10.8 million viewers on ESPN. In St. Louis, the NFL game earned a combined 10.9 rating for ESPN and the simulcast on a local channel, representing the percentage of homes with televisions tuned in. That was lower than New Orleans (15.8), Portl夜网论坛and, Ore. (12.9), Sacramento (12.5) and Las Vegas (11.5). The combined rating in the Seattle area was 36.4. The baseball game drew a 43.8 rating in St. Louis and a 38.5 in Boston. This marked the second time that the World Series and "Monday Night Football" were played in the same metropolitan area on the same night. Angels release veteran slugger Raul Ibanez

  • Raul Ibanez hit 29 home runs last season for the Seattle Mariners, a staggering total for a player in his age 41 season playing his home games in pitcher-friendly Safeco Field. The Angels gave him a one-year, $2.75 million contract this offseason (he could earn bonuses based on plate appearances), hoping he would be able to provide some left-handed power from left field and the DH spot. That didn’t work out so well, and the team released him Saturday afternoon.  In 190 plate appearances this se夜网论坛ason, Ibanez was hitting just .157 with three home runs. That’s the lowest batting average for any player with at least 180 PAs. He’d actually raised that average a bit lately; he’d hit .261 in his past nine games. What’s next for Ibanez? Good question. He’s long been considered one of baseball’s good people, so he would be a solid clubhouse addition for a team that feels he can find some of the power that’s been missing this season.  Or, this could be the end of the road for Ibanez, who turned 42 at the beginning of June. The Angels also optioned right-hander Cam Bedrosian to Double-A Arkansas, after he gave up nine runs, eight hits and seven walks in 5 2/3 innings over his first six big league appearances. Infielder Efren Navarro was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake, and right-hander David Carpenter was added to the major league roster.Ibanez, the second-oldest player in the majors behind Jason Giambi, batted .157 with three homers and 21 RBIs in 190 plate appearances for t[......]

Carlos Gomez's antics result in emptied benches ... again

  • Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez is no stranger to altercations with opposing players. He got into a tiff with the several Braves players last season over his home run celebration, and ignited a bench-clearing brawl with the夜网论坛 Pirates earlier this year thanks to his theatrics. He was at it again on Wednesday against the Nationals after he was plunked by reliever Taylor Hill on the very first pitch of the at-bat.After taking his base,  teammate Lyle Overbay proceeded to hit into a inning-ending double play, but not before Gomez took out second baseman Kevin Frandsen attempting to disrupt the throw to first. Shortstop Ian Desmond confronted Gomez about his actions, and as is customary in the game of baseball, the benches cleared. Gomez had a rather comical explanation as to why Desmond confronted him.Carlos Gomez on his 8th-inning exchange with Desmond: "He liked my shoes. I told him to go to http://t.co/ZlTUTsx4vP and get some" #Brewers— Andrew Gruman (@AndrewGruman) June 25, 2014Desmond was not as amused by the situation.Ian Desmond unhappy with Gomez. "In a World Series game, you slide like that. In a seven-run differential game, there’s no time for that."— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) June 25, 2014The two teams meet next on July 18, the first game back from the All-Star break.[......]
